Federal Volunteer Service PROGRAM 



Foreign citizens can also participate in the Federal Volun­teer Service. To do so, they must possess a residence permit entitling them to work in Germany. Under Section 18 of the German Residency Act, volunteers from abroad can generally be granted such a residence permit specifically in order to participate in the Federal Volunteer Service if they are in possession of an agreement with a place of assignment.

Once they have found a place of deployment, they must apply for a visa for performing voluntary services while still in their home country, since they will only be issued the required residence permit in Germany if they entered the Germany if they entered the country with the appropriate visa.

 The Federal Volunteer Service is:

  • open to internationals, including those from non-EU countries
  • An offer for women and men of all ages
  • a commitment to the common good in Germany
  • an activity in the social, ecological and cultural field or in the field of sports, integration as well as in civil defense or disaster management
  • usually for 1 year (minimum 6 months, maximum up to 24 months)
  • a full-time activity (if you are older than 27, then part-time is also possible)

Typically the voluntary service period is 12 months. However, you can also shorten the service to six months or extend it to 18 months. As volunteer you have a holiday entitlement of at least 24 days within a 12-month service period. FSJ / BFD volunteers under the age of 27 have to work work full-time, BFD Volunteers older than 27 have to work for at least 21 hours a week.
